I think there's a part of me that has to indulge my sentimental side a little bit in the fear that stifling it completely would cause it to take over. I'm terrified of becoming the person that cries when they see baby shoes. So, one way to reconcile this is to allow myself to anthropomorphize the things that Max and I make.
We just sold the first thing we made as "Gravlax?" He is going to a great home and I'm really happy that he knows he's wanted now. The strange thing to me is that I can't possibly think of him as an "it." He is not a product or a manufactured item. When I was going through our etsy page I saw his picture with the words SOLD OUT across the top and thought it was really funny. He is such a sell out.
Goodbye and good luck, Mr. Gravlax! (We accidentally named him)
You can call me crazy now. I know you're thinking it!!!
I love you!

Things that inspire things.
As far as inspiration goes it could really be anything that inspires us. Sometimes it's a feeling. Sometimes it's a color combination. And sometimes it's a photograph of Boris Karloff dressed as Frankenstein's Monster happily cutting cake.
Here are a couple pictures of my desk with some unfinished body parts:
"You guys, I thought of something hysterical, let's have Boris cut the cake!" |

Buttons of Mass Destruction!!!
Here at "Gravlax?" Corporation we try to focus on the little things like team building, morale and synergy? Also buttons. I lived in NY for 4 months over the fall/winter and noticed that I was one of the only personages without a trench coat.
So I bought one and once I got it home I impulsively removed all of the crappy plastic buttons, and felt a little remorseful, since I wanted to wear it that day. So I started sculpting my own buttons to each look like a different famous monster from my favorite movies. This is one of those buttons:
This button was our first sale and that was so exciting. We've sold three of them so far.
This guy is going to be part of a series of skeleton characters in fancy attire.
This one is my favorite of the three. When Max showed me it blew my mind. It blew up my mind!!!
We want to start taking process pictures to post here, because it seems lame to post the pictures from etsy, but we didn't know we were doing a blog until people said it was good to do!! And we want to do a good blog!! So from now on we promise to do our best about that stuff, are you reading this, Max?! Actually you may be the only one, and that's okay. Look at how cool your work is!!!!
Ok, have a good night!

Nature Photoshoot with New Creature
Max lives in Seattle, WA and I live in Portland, OR. Max came to Portland this weekend and we worked on making things for our etsy shop. We took so many pictures of a new little guy outside that I thought it would be fun to post them all here since etsy only allows five.
Our favorite picture of the shoot! |
Hang on! |
I call this pose- sitting on a bench. |
The close-up. |
Warning: this is the first of many of him sitting in a tree! |
You doing okay over there, buddy? Ya need anything? |
One wrong move... |
He likes to sit in trees!!! |
We made him earn his modeling money. |
He made a friend that wasn't just into his body. |
This isn't a tree guys!!! |
It was just too adorable!! |
Excelsior!

Gravlax Blogs!
People have been saying that if you’re selling your work on etsy, then you have to be involved in social media and that a blog is one of the most important things you can have. I love the idea of getting ourselves out there, but “Gravlax?” is just a fun thing to do on the side of our full-time jobs, so no, we will not be blogging.
What is this then?! Oh I’m just going to be writing about our processes and adventures and posting pictures. And I’m gonna have to check something real quick, bear with me, well, wouldn’t you know? Apparently after asking Jeeves, that is what a blog is! So yes, we will be blogging.
We have made 4 sales so far on etsy, 3 of those have been to people that we know but that’s okay, right?!?! The first thing we sold was to a stranger (is there a nicer way to say that?) and it was one of our tree buttons, which Max sculpted using a pin to get the tiny details. The last thing we sold was this guy that I came up with, who we call Wolfbie.
It was late at night and Max and I were Skype-crafting, which is exactly what it sounds like. An idea popped in my head so ridiculous that I couldn’t stop laughing long enough to tell him what it was, and no, I wasn’t under the influence of anything. I drew up a crappy picture in Microsoft Paint and sent it to him. This was the result:
I’m not sure how to end a blog post. Thanks for stopping by?
Love always,
Cammi
